Building in the desert, what the haciendas already knew
Thick walls, courtyards and orientation. The solutions used in the eighteenth century to live without air conditioning are still the most efficient today.

Before air conditioning existed, people lived in the desert anyway. They did it by solving the problem with architecture, and the solutions they found remain, today, the most efficient available. What changed is that we stopped using them because compensating with electricity became cheap.
The principle behind everything: thermal mass
In the desert, the difference between day and night is enormous. There can be fifteen or twenty degrees of variation across twenty-four hours.
A thick wall of adobe or stone takes many hours to heat up. Midday heat works its way in slowly and reaches the interior after nightfall, exactly when the outside air has cooled and windows can be opened to flush it out. By dawn the wall is cold again and the cycle restarts.
That lag is what makes a hacienda house livable in August. It does not insulate against heat: it delays it until it stops being a problem.
A thin modern wall does the opposite. It heats up within an hour and transmits that heat inside at the worst moment.
The courtyard is a machine
The central courtyard is not a decorative element inherited from Spain out of habit. It works.
At night, cold air, being denser, pools in the courtyard and the surrounding rooms draw on it. During the day, a shaded courtyard with vegetation and water cools by evaporation, and that cooler air feeds the rooms. It also generates cross-currents by connecting to the exterior.
Orientation and openings
The rules are simple and still valid:
- Windows north and south, not west. Afternoon sun on a west-facing window is the main source of overheating in a house.
- Small openings on the sun side, generous ones toward the courtyard or north.
- Calculated overhangs to block high summer sun while letting in low winter sun. It is the same overhang: the sun's geometry does the work.
- Cross ventilation, with openings on opposite faces and at different heights, so hot air exits at the top.
Vegetation as part of the building
A deciduous tree to the south gives shade in summer and lets sun through in winter when it drops its leaves. It is a seasonal device that consumes nothing.
The pecan trees at Coahuila's haciendas perform exactly that function around the main houses.
How it translates today
You do not need to build in adobe to apply this. The criteria transfer well to contemporary materials:
- Walls with thermal mass, or with insulation appropriate to the climate.
- Ventilated roofs or generous roof insulation, since the greatest heat gain comes through the roof.
- Solar-control glazing on exposed faces.
- Light colors on exterior surfaces.
- Rainwater capture, even where rainfall is low: when it rains here, it rains hard.
- Photovoltaics, which in a region with this much radiation is among the best-paying investments.
Why it matters here
At Ex-Hacienda Amargos the boutique hotel is planned within the hacienda's original structure under sustainable architecture criteria. The reasoning is simple: a building that has stood for nearly three centuries has already demonstrated that its approach works in this climate.
The sensible thing is to learn from it before proposing something else.
